May 2008. The object was to design a "loco" which had to run on O gauge track, to be powered by No. 1 Clockwork Motor. The loco had to travel as far as possible on its own, then do another run towing a wagon loaded up to 5 kg. The loco could be of any design, but the drive to the wheels had to be via coupling rods; no direct gearing allowed. The track would be oval or kidney-shaped (2 foot radius curves). The solution was to go for one bogie only, with motor on top. This needed extra ballast to get enough tractive effort for towing. I found I had created something that looked like elephant ears.... so there had to be one logical end to the exercise...TRACKYDERM!
